In the 8th edition of this manual (7th ed., CH, Jan'07, 44-2450), significant additions include the guidelines for citing some of the newest information formats, including information graphics, podcasts, blogs, social networking sites, and e-books.  This style manual from the Council of Science Editors does not simply tell scientists how to cite appropriately; it provides a holistic overview of preparing scientific work, from typography to specialized scientific conventions.  Also included is an overview that discusses plagiarism and copyright, including Creative Commons licensing.  The very clear organization of the manual helps readers locate relevant information.  Included is a wide range of information, such as how to choose appropriate—rather than "cutesy"—journal article titles so that information will show up in online searches.  The pleasant, readable style of the text will appeal to undergraduate and graduate students.  Upper-level students will find a lengthy section on journal style and format, and on published media (e.g., monographs).  Although journals tend to have their own unique style, the guidelines presented here are general enough to be helpful and descriptive to a wide academic audience.  This manual is also available via an online subscription at  http://www.scientificstyleandformat.org/. Summing Up: Essential. Lower-level undergraduates through researchers/faculty.
