Louisiana, Superior Court of the Territory of Orleans, New Orleans : Adelle v Beauregard, Fall 1810 [printed].

Summary:

Adelle, a woman of mixed race, claimed her freedom. In the case of a black person the court would assume them as a slave unless proved otherwise by the plaintiff. However, in the case of a person of mixed race, it was the responsibility of the defendant to produce evidence in the form of a title of ownership of that slave. The defendant Beauregard produced evidence that he had brought the plaintiff from the West Indies, had her educated in a New York boarding school before bringing her to his home in New Orleans to work. Shortly after which she left his home and claimed her freedom. The judge ruled in favour of the plaintiff as being as free woman.
